Sustained reading with performance. She is using voice and pacing to hold an audience, which is oral storytelling as much as decoding.
“third one worked. it held Biscuit for eight seconds”
Iterative structural testing. She changed one variable at a time and kept the failed versions to compare against.

Repeated observation and tally. She noticed a pattern in where they return, which is the beginning of a hypothesis.

Fractions and unit scaling in a real constraint. She chose to write it down rather than estimate, which is new this month.

Long-form narrative with a consistent world rule. The flooding premise connects straight back to her bridge work.

Systematic disassembly with her own documentation method. Nobody suggested the labelling.

Endurance plus a self-run negotiation. She held her position without escalating, then proposed a compromise.
“if you make the gap smaller the water goes faster, I did not expect that”
Direct encounter with flow rate. She hit a genuine surprise and stayed with it rather than moving on.
“step one find a flat stone. step two do not use bark it floats away”
Procedural writing from experience, including a warning derived from her own failure. This is technical writing.
“Ignored everything except the bridge models. Asked the steward four questions.”
Depth over breadth again. She interviewed an adult expert unprompted, which is research behaviour.
“it smells like nothing yet. I am calling it Gordon”
Beginning a long observation with daily measurement. Naming it is commitment.
“morning one is wrong, the shadows go the other way”
Observational drawing with self-critique against reality. She corrected herself using evidence, not taste.
“She wrote the rules on a card and enforced them completely fairly, even against herself”
Rule design and impartial arbitration. Holding a group of mixed ages for ninety minutes is real facilitation.
“the book says four of them but two I am not sure about so I drew them”
Classification against a reference, and honest uncertainty. She recorded doubt rather than guessing.
“£61.40, then found a way to do it for £38 with pallets”
Budgeting under constraint, then optimising. The second number was her idea and she checked it twice.
“Wouldn't do the workbook page. Then filled her notebook after supper without being asked.”
The resistance is to the format, not the act. Worth noting that her output rises when nobody is watching.
“9 miles. I timed it. 54 minutes there, 41 back because downhill”
Distance, time and an explanation for the difference. She reached for the reason without prompting.
“flat. I think I killed it in the fridge”
A failure she diagnosed herself with a plausible cause. The hypothesis is testable, which is the point.
“Twelve minutes on the phone explaining warm proving. Grandma is now making one.”
Teaching a corrected method to an adult. Explaining a fix out loud is the strongest evidence of understanding we have.
“one square is half a metre. the shed is wonky in real life too”
Scale drawing with a stated ratio, plus fidelity to what is actually there.
“Low energy. Didn't want to go out. Read, then read it again.”
Consolidation days matter. Rereading is how she settles a week rather than a sign of a stalled one.
“it works but you have to pull twice as far. that is annoying but fine”
She discovered the trade-off in mechanical advantage by feel and accepted it as a rule of the world.
“She had written six questions on her hand. He gave her a spare cog.”
Prepared research with a real practitioner. The prepared questions are the notable part, not the visit.
“the first seam is bad but I left it, it is on the inside”
Pattern making and a pragmatic judgement about which flaws matter. Useful instinct for a maker.
“more things under the flat wide ones. eleven stones checked”
Sampling with a controlled question. She kept the sample size and stated the pattern she found.
“I nearly did not log the bridge because it looked like playing. Reading it back, it was three hours of controlled testing.”
“The workbook refusal worried me all day. Then 900 words. I have stopped taking the refusal personally.”
