A home education portfolio is a chosen collection of examples and explanations that helps a family understand and communicate a child’s learning.

What do you need your portfolio to do?

Start with the question you want it to answer. You may want to keep favourite pieces of work, explain progress to a tutor, see interests emerging across different activities or find a helpful idea for tomorrow. These are related needs, but they call for different tools.

For families following a packaged curriculum, a binder or digital folder may be enough to organise completed work. For interest-led, unschooling or project-based learning, much of the useful detail sits in conversations, experiments and decisions made during the activity. Individa is designed to help make sense of those experiences.

How do the main approaches compare?

This comparison describes typical uses, rather than rating every product or family’s approach. A binder can include thoughtful observations, and a classroom app can be used creatively outside school.

How do the main approaches compare?
ApproachUseful when you want to…What to consider
Binder or digital folderKeep drawings, writing, projects and curriculum work together. You choose the structure and write any interpretation or overview yourself.
SeesawCollect student learning in a digital portfolio and connect it with classroom teaching and family communication. Its classroom-centred tools may or may not match an independent home education routine.
ClassDojo portfoliosShare student work within a wider classroom and family communication platform.Consider whether you need the wider school communication features.
IndividaUnderstand everyday learning, see returning interests and choose activities shaped around a child. It relies on the moments you describe and your review of AI-assisted interpretations.

Why can documenting interest-led learning feel demanding?

An afternoon can include measuring ingredients, negotiating game rules and figuring out why a wheel sticks. Turning each experience into formal educational language afterwards takes attention that families may prefer to spend together.

Individa offers a shorter starting point: a text or voice note describing what happened. WhatsApp logging is included in Full, so you can send a moment from your phone. If information such as duration is missing, the conversation can ask for it. You can edit the resulting trail entry later.

That can reduce the amount you need to write from scratch. It does not remove the need to check interpretations, provide useful context or decide what is worth including.

What does Individa add beyond a collection of moments?

Learning Patterns bring together recurring interests and ways of approaching activities. Quests offer ideas shaped by that emerging picture. Bridges suggest ways to practise less explored areas through interests the child already enjoys.

Saved Quests and Bridges sit together in Saved ideas, where you can organise them into a week and mark completed activities. The printable learning summary and editable tutor brief then help you share the picture with someone supporting your child’s learning.

Can a portfolio help with a local authority conversation?

A clear portfolio can help you explain the education you are providing. You might share selected activities, your child’s interests, examples of learning over time and what you plan to explore next. Individa’s learning summary can contribute to that explanation. Choose a date range, then use your browser’s print options to print it or save it as a PDF.

In England, GOV.UK states that home education does not have to follow the National Curriculum. Local authority enquiries and legal requirements need to be understood in their own context, and guidance differs across the UK.

Individa does not certify that an education is suitable, provide legal advice or guarantee local authority acceptance. Check the relevant official guidance and choose the information appropriate to your family’s circumstances.

Which approach fits your family?

Choose a binder or folder if keeping and organising chosen work is your main need. Consider a classroom platform if its teaching and communication tools are relevant to your situation. Explore Individa if you want help understanding everyday learning and turning that understanding into interest-led next steps.

You can also combine them. A finished model, a written explanation and a note about the child’s problem-solving can each contribute something useful.
